- I've heard a lot about DOOM ][ just being DOOM with spiffed up
- graphics and different baddies-in short, DOOM and a WAD. If this is
- true, or if it isn't, will WADS for DOOM work with DOOM ][? DOOM ][ is
- going to have the modem play feature, right? If what I said earlier is
- true, then what version of DOOM will DOOM ][ be equivalent to, and is
- that version bug free? I suppose I'll just have to wait until DOOM ]['s
- actually out, but any answers would be appreciated. Thanx.

- Ok I don't have any 'official' word on this, but this is what I expect is
- actually the case: Doom 1.666 and Doom II will indeed have the same
- engine but either iD will disable the new features in the 1.666 version
- of it, or possibly the new features simply will not be available unless
- you have the Doom II wad. (By new features, I hear tell of this
- super-shotgun and there has to be some other new stuff...) Either way,
- Doom II will still be a step up from Doom 1.x, even if it may only be a
- small step. (Hell, I've ordered my already.)
-
- At least that's how I'd handle this if I were doing it. Any comments you iD
- guys?

-
- It uses the same engine as Doom 1.666, yet to be released. However, it
- will have the new monsters, new weapon, etc. Doom 2 is kinda like the
- diff between DOOM 1.1 and DOOM 1.2--Its well worth the trouble but
- basically the game is the same (the diff is you got modem play, which
- enhances the game greatly, but the actually graphics and stuff changed
- very little. With 1.6 you will get better grapihcs and stuff, new
- overall features, etc). Its well worth the purchase, prolly since you
- won't know what you're missing out on. Either way, DOOM is the _BEST_
- game ever made, undisputed. There really is no end to DOOM fun. And its
- not a pass-once-no-more-playing game. I've passed it many times, and
- each time I find new things and try new things, continuously improving.
- Of course, the best part of doom is deathmatch (yeeehaw!).

-
- I realize that you've probably already been roasted slowly over a hot
- flame by Neff, but just in case....
-
- The DOOM.EXE simply provides the framework of the DOOM game. It
- includes information on behaviors for monsters, weapons and other game
- mechanics. DOOM ][ includes the required information for the new
- monsters, new weapons, new linedef/sector behaviors, etc. But the
- actual monster/weapon sprites have to be included in the DOOM ][ IWAD.
- Because of this, id has used the recent rash of DOOM betas to test their
- DOOM ][ engine on the internet community, i.e., DOOM 1.666 exe will be
- identical to the DOOM ][ exe. Since Jay Wilbur has said that DOOM ][
- has been sent to production, this means that we can expect to see the
- DOOM 1.666 official shareware release any time now.

- John,
-
- Here's a copy of a note I just posted earlier on the 'net:
-
- Today's Wall Street Journal (8/24/94, p. B1) has a big article
- about the upcoming releases of Doom II and Mortal Combat 2. According
- to the Journal, iD has licensed Doom II to GT Interactive to
- distribute through retail channels. GT Interactive is reported to
- be a "closely held" subsidiary of Good Times Entertainment, those
- people who bring you old and classic movies at cheap prices (I have
- their versions of It's a Wonderrful Life & Close Encounters in my
- collection). So, not only does it appear that GT is legitimate, but
- that they're going to be the only game in town (no pun intended) if
- you want to buy Doom II.
-
- Here's some other interesting facts about Doom/Doom II from the Journal:
-
- 1) GT plans a $3 to $5 million advertising campaign for the launch
- of Doom II. This is a huge budget for a software game, especially
- one that started out as shareware.
-
- 2) Doom has over 100,000 registered users.
-
- 3) GT already has orders to ship over 420,000 copies of Doom II--
- at an average wholesale price of $39 a unit!
-
- 4) GT expects to sell at least 1 million copies of Doom II.
-
- 5) Look for Doom II advertising in some non-traditional places,
- including People magazine and MTV.

-
- Yes.
-

-
- Yes.

-
- There will be later.
-

-
- Yes.
-

-
- I don't know.
-
- > 7) Who produced the DOOM II survival guide mentioned in the flier?
-
- We did.
-
- > 8) GT's flier doesn't specify or ask for disk size. Is it 3.5"?
-
- Yes.
-
- > 9) The flier also says 486 *required*. Is this correct?
-
- It would help. DOOM ][ is MUCH larger (levels) than DOOM.
- You can use a 386 but it won't be as fast.
-
- > 10) Is id intending to have the same DOOM.EXE for 1.666 as for DOOM II?
-
- Yes.
-
- > 11) Will the shareware episode be included with DOOM II?
-
- On the CD you will get DOOM and DOOM ][. Not on the disks.
-
- > 12) The flier says 30 new levels. Is there a tenth mission in each episode?
-
- Yes.
-
- > 13) Finger help@idsoftware says '32 levels finished'. Hmm? 2 extra levels?
-
- Secret levels.
-
- P.S. Please post this if you would like. We are very busy finishing DOOM ][ and

-
- 1) DOOM ][ is the commercial release. There will be no shareware episode.
- I don't know if a 2-level 'teaser' like Spear of Destiny had is planned.
- 2) Orders placed with GT will be shipped near the end of September.
- 3) The retail price is $55, so GT's offer of $48.90 is a 'discount'.
- 4) No CD ROM available at this time. GT is shipping only 3.5" disks.
- 5) 08/24/94 WSJ has article about advertising campaign planned by GT.
- GT expects to sell 1 million copies.

- How much Doom do you play? Do you play it all of the time or just a little
- bit? Technically, if you play it a lot, you should reg. it. If you
- reg. Doom I, you get two full episodes of carnage plus the ability to play
- hundreds of pwads. If you play constantly for 3 months, you couldn't play
- all of the pwads (pwads are new missions for doom created by unselfish
- doomers). Here's what I would do:
- Aug '94 Reg. Doom I
- Sept '94 Play Doom I until it is completed, experimetn with modem play
- Oct-Dec '94 Play the hundreds of pwads for Doom I and wait for Doom II
- to get all patched up for flawless play :)
- Jan '95 Download the shareware of Doom II. It should be better than
- Doom I. Try it out to make sure you like it. You will if
- you liked Doom I.
- Feb '95 Buy the reg Doom II. If you saved your pennies, you can
- afford another $50 by Feb. That's a total of seven months!
- Mrch-May'95 Play the new Doom II pwads. There should be a whole bunch of
- them by now.
- Summer '95 Anxiously await QUAKE. It should be out some time this summer.
- Dnload the shareware ver and enjoy.
- til '96 Reg Quake, and play more of the pwads for Quake. Try the
- superserver BBS that allow you to play against 99 other
- Doomers like yourself. If you play your cards right, you
- can play Doom for the next couple of years :)

- Get both. Doom II looks like it will be really cool, but it also looks
- like it is going to be a LOT harder than Doom I. The monsters, from what
- I have seen, are tougher, shoot more stuff at you, and are more numerous.
- I don't think we'll be finishing Doom II using only the pistol any time
- soon. Doom I is great fun, and it will give you much needed practice for
- Doom II.
-
- Understand that I am not a beta tester for Doom II, but I saw a demo of
- it a couple of weeks ago, and have played with some of the monsters
- thanks to several people's brilliant hacks to the Doom 1.6 beta. Doom II
- looks TOUGH.
-
- Your wife probably spends more on her hobbies than both games will cost.
- You will definitely NOT get a better value for the money -- I've been
- playing my registered Doom for months now. I've gotten hundreds of hours
- of play for $40. Definitely about as cheap as it gets. In fact, THAT'S
- the real problem with Doom. It's easy to get so sucked in to the damn
- thing that your spouse will begin to HATE the game. My girl friend does,
- but then she also likes to play deathmatch, so go figure. (I have a small
- network setup here in my home.)
-
- Warning: If you haven't already noticed, Doom is bordering on becoming an
- alternative lifestyle for some people. (One day, it, or perhaps Quake,
- may eclipse the game of golf as the favorite pass-time of aging, geeky
- white-guys... Think of the advantages -- you don't have to wear funny
- clothes to play Doom!)

- The question here is can you buy DOOMII for a lower price that GTI's offer?
- The answer is yes. Ive seen DOOMII orders for 44 bucks in games magazines.
- (CGW I think). Secondly, would GTI make less money if everyone bought
- from either a non-GTI mail order or retail ? I could be wrong, but I think
- the answer is yes only because they seem very eager to sell to anyone,

-
- Im not against big money. I'm just not sure if GTI's price + shipping

- Are there any other facts on this? I find this hard to believe. In eight

- My two cents:
- At work here, we set up Doom 1.2 on the net and could not go 30 seconds
- with two players without it crashing. So I hooked up our machines directly
- to each other so we had our own little personal "Doom Net" and it hasn't

- Yes, GT Interactive Software is legit. They were the ones who distributed
- Castle Wolfenstein 3d (commercial version) for Id. I am not surprised
- that they are the ones who are distributing DOOM ][ for Id as well. Id
- is a small software maker that concerns itself with mainly software

-
- They just don't have the marketing resources (broadband

- Nor do I think they want to...at least not now. Maybe if they make a
- horde of money off of DOOM ][ (by the way, DOOM (ie. 1.2) is small
- potatoes compared to the revenue that DOOM ][ will generate) they
- will consider growing their company into a developer/distributor

- Hi there,
-
- Being an avid Doomer, I've played as much of the Internet add-ons and

-
- ' DOOM II will represent as much an improvement over DOOM as DOOM
- was for Wolfenstein (the Graphics Engine, etc ..) '
-
- Well this is just NOT the case, the screenshots /interview showed that
- the GameEngine is excactly the same as the orginal DOOm engine. Ok there
- are a few new enemies, however should we consider a 'mini spider demon'
- breathing flying skulls as a '''new monster''', or as a very easy

-
- There a plenty of new levels, fine but we've allready got hundreds of
- these, thanks to the thriving DOOM a.g.d. community. The features mentioned
- in the many 'wanted features for DOOM II' threads, discussed a few months
- ago like flame-throwers, vehicles, shattering windows, new weapons,
- granades, true 3D are NOT implemented.
-
- The bottom line is that DOOM II, if this magazine represents a true
- picture of the whole thing, is nothing more then DOOM with a few
- new enemies and possibly some new textures. In the days when greed
- was less prevelant in GameLand these things were called data disks
- or add-ons, but positioning it as a new 'gaming experience'offers
- publishers the opportunity to ask the full price.
-
- I DO appreciate ID's efforts sofar and I think they DO set an example
- towards the rest of software publishers by offering free upgrades
- and communicate directly with their gamers/fans/customers. But if
- they raise expectations to high I'm afraid that even DIE HARD Doomers
- (Like myself) might be dissappointed and then it will be really
- HELL ON EARTH indeed.
-
- I'm keen to see how you guys/ladies feel about this, and flames the like
- of 'F*** Off, Everything ID says and does is superb' get happily
- ignored.
-
- DOOM on.
-
- Carlos.

- : Well this is just NOT the case, the screenshots /interview showed that
- : the GameEngine is excactly the same as the orginal DOOm engine. Ok there
- : are a few new enemies, however should we consider a 'mini spider demon'
- : breathing flying skulls as a '''new monster''', or as a very easy
- : to implement oppponent as the data/routines where at hand anyway.
-
- Carlos... where you been, buddy? We've known that DOOM ][ would be
- using the same .EXE file that DOOM uses for several months now.

- I was wondering if anyone can tell me about DOOM II? I've been away for the
- summer for an Internship and haven't been able to keep up with the latest news.
- So, if anyone can tell me any information on DOOM II, I would appreciate it.
- Is it a new DOOM game that is coming out?
- Thanks, Brad
-
- P.S. Any replies to either this news group or sllvg@cc.usu.edu, thanks.

- Yoikes !! I take it by now that many DOOMers have popped the DOOM II
- attributes into the DOOM I beasties. *Zoinks* but the original levels
- are deadly now - it sure puts a new spin on those familiar corridors !
-
- Here's a new challenge while we wait for the actual DOOM II. Other than
- Episode 1 Levels 1 and 2, (which are fairly easy) who wants to post LMPs
- of themselves completing any other of the levels ? If someone doesn't
- want to open a site for such files (since INFANT2 is down), we could post
- to alt.binaries.doom (I'll mail them to any interested parties that don't
- have access to that group).
-
- I guess if we had to have rules, it would be that you either have to start the
- level from scratch (ie. -wart 1 4 : start with pistol) *OR* complete the level
- before it and bring some weapons forward. In the latter case the LMP will
- obviously include that first level. For instance (in case you're as tired and
- muddled as I am), If you wanted to do Episode 1 level 5, you could either
- record the LMP from -wart 1 5 (and do the level starting with the pistol),
- or -wart 1 4 and record level 4 throughout (thus carrying level 4 weapons/ammo
- forward) and then level 5..
-
- I've tried doing levels 3, 4 and 5 from scratch with no great <G> success.
- I'd sure be interested in seeing how others fare against those guided-rocket
- launchin' critters in the regular maps. If there's anyone willing to put
- their LMPs where their mouth is <G> post away ! I'll give it another shot
- tonight and see what I can manage. Feel free to email me LMPs direct if you'd
- like or post to the binary group with a "pointer" here.
-
- Get crackin' !
-
- ps. no LMPs recorded with the TURBO button off... ;)
- pps. in the event of two LMPs posted of the same level: if only one of them
- starts at the actual level, it is the winner. If both methods are the
- same, then it's the highest monsters killed # + secrets found # .
- (BTW all LMPs on UltraViolence skill. This *IS* alt.games.doom, home of
- the World's best DOOMers, after all ! <G> )

- Doom ][ Review:
-
- Let me start by saying that if you don't have anything more that a 486/33
- w/ 4 megs of ram, you're not going to enjoy Doom ][. Doom ][ would run
- like Doom 1 if you have high end 486 w/ LOTS of RAM, but if you only have
- a 33, good luck. In the final level it gets down to 1 frame every second
- or so, and is virtually unplayable, even w/ detail set real low.
-
- Now, if you have a computer that can HANDLE Doom ][, you are gonna have
- some fun. This game is basically the Doom engine with a few new enemies,
- and a super shotgun. The new enemies fit in real well with the new
- textures and sounds.
-
- Among the new features:
-
- o Doors open faster
- o Supershotgun that takes 2 shotgun shells to fire
- o New textures that look extremely professional
- o 4 new enemies that *I* can think of. (I spent 15 minutes with it)
- o No more episodes (Uses 30 new 'maps')
-
- Thats all I can think of right now.. I am sure there will be a FAQ out
- with 6000 more features added to that list, but those are just the main
- ones. Anyways, have fun.
